Substance Use Disorder
Substance use disorder (SUD) is a mental health condition.
Substance use disorder (SUD) is a mental health condition characterized by a pattern of problematic use of drugs or alcohol that leads to significant impairment or distress. It is also known as addiction or substance abuse.
Substances that can lead to SUD include alcohol, prescription drugs, illicit drugs, and tobacco. SUD can cause significant physical, psychological, and social problems, affecting a person’s health, relationships, and daily functioning.
A combination of genetic, environmental, and psychological factors causes SUD. Risk factors for SUD include a family history of addiction, trauma, stress, and social and cultural factors.
You’re not alone.
Symptoms of SUD can vary depending on the substance used, but common symptoms include:
- Fatigue or loss of energy
- Craving or intense desire to use the substance.
- Difficulty controlling substance use.
- Continued use despite negative consequences.
- Tolerance (needing more of the substance to achieve the desired effect)
- Withdrawal symptoms when not using the substance.
- Neglecting responsibilities or social activities because of substance use
- Using the substance in risky situations
SUD is a treatable condition, and several effective treatments are available, including medication, behavioral therapy, and support groups. It’s important to seek help from a healthcare professional if you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of SUD.
SUDs affect over 20 million Americans aged 12 and over.
75% of deaths from drug use disorders among users aged 50 years and older are caused by opioids.
In 2021, 94% of people aged 12 or older with a substance use disorder did not receive any treatment.
